Recently, Create96 hosted an art show at The Grove featuring the talented Raheem Nelson who can be found at his virtual studio Eye of the Sun God.
The show titled Apple iPie: Slices of iPad art displayed an array of stunning urban works worthy of a Sun King, which I’m crowning this brilliant artist.
His works are ablaze with an array of colors, ranging from plums and reds, amethyst-hues, yellows and amber’s, all are undeniably dazzling.
Good enough to eat!
So good I wanna dance!
I want her hair!
Raheem is surrounded by beautiful ladies.
She made the most incredible Apple pies.
Delicious Apple pies!
The beautiful Rose… this art piece portrays Rose as she is inside and out – stunningly exuberant! Plus she made this incredible fondant iPad art cake that we all gobbled up at the end.
A Saucy Evening With The Ramones

A recent trip to Daddy’s Junky Music turned out to be more than just a visit to my husband’s toy store. Jeff’s the musician in the family and has a deep appreciation for all things vintage, especially musical instruments; this often has us searching music stores for the next big score.
To my surprise I discovered something to my likeness, “food” and not just any food, Marky Ramone’s “Brooklyn’s Own Pasta Sauce”. Who would have thought, Daddy’s Junky Music was now venturing into the culinary arts.
I was expecting to keep myself entertained, playing with the usual synthesizers, guitars and drums, while Jeff searched for the next shiny thing. Instead I reviewed the product selection sitting atop of the counter with nostalgic enthusiasm and quickly purchased the Marinara Pasta Sauce. This needed some additional research, the kind where you break and dip your bread, while your pasta takes you for a saucy swim.
To accompany the pasta we made a quick stop at Bread & Chocolate, our local bakery for fresh baked Chiabatta bread. At home the pans started clanking. Water boiling, sauce cooking – check, bread sliced, table set – soon the tasting will begin.
During the entire dinner Jeff and I hardly spoke, other than those few descriptive words we mumbled between bites… that went something like this…
Georgie: Wow… hm-mm… this is good.
Jeff: Yeah, surprising really tasty!
Georgie: Seriously for store bought sauce in a bottle, this is really good.
Jeff: Did we get just one bottle, we should get more.
Marky Ramone’s Marinara Pasta Sauce passed the test! Rich and flavorful you can taste all the ingredients. Unexpected freshness of tomatoes, basil and assorted spices jumped out to greet your palate.
I found myself flashing back to my college days in the early 90’s, hanging out at the Agora Ballroom in Hallandale Beach, Florida, watching The Ramone’s play live. The stage was set aglow in a light blue hue and music was echoing throughout the auditorium. We danced and flicked our lighter’s to the bands cult classics like, “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend”, “Gabba Gabba Hey” and “I Wanna Be Sedated”. It was a great night.
Above the stage you could see the VIP glass room, which seemed to be floating in mid air. The guests were mingling amongst one another and enjoying themselves. A few moments later entered Joey and CJ and all I could think of was… I have to get in there, but how could I sneak in? I summoned up all the nerve I had, approaching the body guard and said, “I’m a friend of the bands”. Next thing I knew we were heading up to the VIP room, apparently cleared for access.
Woah – that’s right, baby… we had VIP access. We joined the small elite group of privileged punk rockers. Schmoozing with Joey & CJ, we ate Domino’s’ pizza, ironic I know and I got this awesome autographed Domino’s Pizza menu as a keepsake from this remarkable night!
As for my musical attempts, well, let’s just say they usually involve a fantasy filled with everyone’s hair blowing back from my awesomeness, for real!
You’re Beautiful to me…

My sister Lisa… is so beautiful!
It has been almost a year since Lisa passed away and gone to sleep forever, losing her battle with cancer. I was lucky to have spent the last few months with her and deeply grateful for having this time to reminisce with one another, while telling the stories of our lives.
I got to soak up her incredible infectious smile and let it wrap itself around me giving me the courage to continue being a sister, an aunt to her children and friend to her husband.
For most of my life, my sister was to me a Greek goddess, incredibly smart, talented and beautiful. For a while she was bigger than life itself, I looked up to her, following in her footsteps, doing everything she did, some of it well before my time and Lisa in turn took care of me. That’s what sisters do, we take care of each other. How I miss her… in a way it’s like losing a little piece of yourself forever.
This is the first time I can actually articulate a thought, a sentence regarding her, without getting emotional. Sharing with the world how incredibly cool she was and how much you would have thought so too!
The things I miss most about her could occupy this blog for decades, though for now, for today, I miss her mostly because she was an incredible listener, a great friend and we could talk for hours about anything. I suppose it’s why she became an attorney, with her compassionate demeanor and desire to help people.
Although, I think she missed her calling, her sense of style was exquisite and her storytelling was eloquent, that she could have easily been a chief editor for any magazine. I would have loved that… it would have meant glorious samples of clothing, shoes, jewelry and she would have shared them with me – as she always has.
This is one of the last photo’s I took with Lisa, eating dinner at the swanky Canyon Restaurant in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, followed by shopping at Jezebels, what a great night.
What finally inspired me to write about Lisa today is a photo project on Pioneer Woman about sisters. I looked through old wonderful photo’s of Lisa and I to submit to the photo assignment. This one above was my favorite, well, because it’s the last photo taken of us together – it’s us being real and shows how much we loved each other. Hanging out at our favorite places, spending time with good friends eating and shopping.
Lisa was talented in so many ways… a writer, a peacemaker, an attorney, a chef, an artist, a musician – a genuine rock star – she’s Punk Royalty ! We had so much fun growing up on Fort Lauderdale beach in the middle of the music scene, which was a big part of our lives. Lisa took me to my first Patti Smith concert in 1979 – what a turning point for me. It was a time when my life really began to take shape. It helped define who I am today, those moments are laced with lovely remnants of my beautiful sister.
I will love her always!
10 years ago Lisa was diagnosed with cancer, surviving the first sign of this wicked disease. Her cancer going into remission, she began the healing and recovery process. During this time she began a beautiful scrapbook for each of the children in our family, there’s 5 of us, three boys and two girls.
I’m a twin to one of the boys, though Lisa and I seemed more like twins then Peter and I. Throughout the years, Lisa would add new photo’s, events and milestones to each of our books. It was as though she was keeping them open ended, she never had the chance to finish them.
Her lovely daughter Elizabeth, my beautiful niece, surprised me this past holiday by completing the scrapbook and sending it to me.
It brought tears to my eyes and always will. I’m no longer crying tears of sadness but tears of joy. I want to celebrate Lisa and hope that one day I may be as beautiful as she was.

A Chance to Create96
Tonight’s First Createup
Because it’s Chinese New Year a time to start anew with inspiration and second chances, I’m embracing this occasion to be more creative. I’m attending Create96’s first createup this evening at The Grove New Haven.
Create96 is the brainchild of my lovely & talented husband Jeff, who has one of the most beautiful minds I have ever encountered, one of the many reason why I married him. A child at heart who is forever creating, inventing and exploding with new idea’s daily, seriously! I think he has more ideas within a day then there are actual minutes in a day, if that’s at all possible… they’re super incredible ideas!
Jeff has partnered with an equally talented friend & co-worker Mason whose inspired enthusiasm may give Create96 one of its competitive edges, making these two a great team. And then there’s me… who hides behind the scenes, adding my two cents on occasion that usually goes something like this… I created a new recipe, want to try it?
Because my original New Year’s resolution is to get skinny, which I’m doing quite well with, Hooray! I really haven’t been eating much, other than loads of salads like this one, Arugula, Grilled Chicken & Salsa Salad with slight variations. So I’ve turned my focus onto creating other things, for now.
This renewed passion has taken me down memory lane… reminiscing my childhood reflecting a disheveled eight year old, chalk in hand, lying on the side-walk, drawing houses, designing art deco furniture and space planning where all the furniture would go. And when there was no more chalk left to draw with – I would use white rocks as chalk to finish my masterpieces. I never became an Interior Designer; I’m far too eclectic for that, as I’ve been known to wear pink sued heels, green satin slacks and a fedora to pull it all together.
I never really explored art, drawing or panting until later in life persuaded by a dear friend to take a drawing class, thus began my passion for drawing once again, while I don’t think myself a good artist – at all, it’s more of a meditative obsession for me.
So for today’s post…
For Chinese New Year and renewing my artistic side.
For New Years and getting super skinny.
For Create96 renewing my inspiration for the arts.
I’m sharing a serious of self-portrait drawings I rendered over the years.
Circa 1994 – 2002
So go create, will ya!
And… if you find yourself inspired swing by and join us at Create96 createup this evening!

When all is said and done with my new years resolution to be super skinny, I hope to look something like this!
Zoi A Love Story

A photo journey of my animal family…
This is Zoi, which means zest for life in Greek. I named her Zoi, well because she was given to me as a Christmas gift by my little brother. It was during a time I was extra sad and he thought she could bring some “Zoi” back into my life. At least that’s what his Psychology class was teaching him, that animals had miraculous super healing powers, or so they say.
I must admit they were on to something here… as I have come to know this on my own and witnessing first hand the animal-therapy program at Yale New Haven Hospital as a volunteer. It really truly works!
Zoi was adopted from the Humane Society in Broward County, Florida. I would encourage anyone wanting a pet to adopt form a shelter – adopted pets make the best companions.
I think Zoi is a short hair domestic, though I swear she has some Egyptian heritage in her, because of her large pointy ears and Siamese looking eyes, but that’s probably me just being an overzealous caretaker.
Zoi wasn’t the first name I gave her… it was Venus. She had this cute puzzle on her face, that looked like a V or the mark of Zorro. Thank goodness I realized there wasn’t a connection there, other than me trying way to hard to be avant garde.
The other love of my life, Amber… isn’t she beautiful, she’s Himalayan Persian mix.
Last April Amber went to sleep forever, sniffle.
I really miss her pretty kitty face and even though there was a sibling rivalry between Zoi and Amber, I know Zoi would braid Amber’s long mane while we were away. This explains why Amber’s hair would get tangled. Every so often we would give her a lion cut, like this one below.
Amber, her stage name… “Amberlina” is kind of a big deal here in kitty town… she’s a famous kitty star.
Zoi has other family members who live in sunny Florida – Blossom and Cosmo. I think Zoi misses Florida sometimes, especially lounging in the warm sunshine, eating long stems of grass, sprawling under the flowers bushes and her favorite… chasing lizards! She’s an indoor kitty now that we live in New England!
Meet Blossom, she likes to talk a lot and is a really good jumper. Blossom can jump so high that she can almost put the star on the Christmas tree… see how talented she is?
Blossom is an American Eskimo and would like to join the circus someday. Sometimes she barks and jumps at the same time – insistently, that usually happens when she’s gotten into Dad’ s beer cabinet or when she’s training for the circus.
Cosmo is really cool, he’s a Puggle, a great hugger and a pretty sharp dresser at that! He can croon out a Frank Sinatra tune on a whim. This attracts a variety of lady Puggle’s who swoon the back yard just to get a glimpse of him. Fame seems to run in the family. Cosmo is a real lover and a member of the Safety Pug family.
Speaking of lovers… I never thought it would happen to Zoi but she’s fallen pretty hard for a really cute guy named Sock, who’s also famous and goes by the stage name @sockington, he doesn’t even know she’s alive… she tweets him once in a while and is still patiently awaiting his reply!
@sockington probably thinks I’m a kitty stalker… I’m not sure why? When he and Zoi have so much in common, they’re a perfect pair. Though there is that “Sockamillion” chance they could be related – they do look a lot alike. Either way I’m just smitten crazy about him, for her.
So that’s my animal family life… as for me and my healing… Zoi taught me how to love all over again, deeper and harder than ever before!
Oh’ and my lovely husband, just called me the cat lady!
The End

My niece Lorraine is one of the most creative little people I know. I admire her beautiful imagination, filled with artistic spark and inventiveness. These ideals often slip away from us as we mature into adulthood for the many reasons life bestows upon us… our work, our families, school… We’re really not to blame; it’s what we’re taught.
I began this writing endeavor as a way to share my love for baking, a keepsake for beloved family recipes and creating new ones. I was taking a risk and trying something new. At first, I never imagined being a blogger, ever! I had a list of reasons why I should not blog, most of them unfounded. Luckily the economy helped me view things differently, to embrace new opportunities where others no longer existed. I’m not a writer by trade, though I do love telling stories… It’s really a lot of fun.
The best part is making new friends and having a community where you’re sharing, learning and discovering a diverse wealth of information. There’s a whole new class of education that goes on here.
While creating this blog allowed me to unleash the sleeping artistic side within me, it also allows me to share that experience with family, like my niece Lorraine, whom I find incredible, invincible, awesome, brilliant, pretty, intelligent, sporty, feisty, funny, hopeful, honest, artistic, smart and beautiful!
So without further ado… A book by Lorraine…
This is the first series of Lorraine’s long creative journey and she is a welcomed guest blogger on Georgiecakes anytime. If you find your creativity getting blocked remember to “Stop, Drop & Roll”, it may just save your life.
One more thing…
Meet the real Safety Pug Family and my twin brother Pete, really!
May you have a Happy New Year!

Every year right after the Thanksgiving holiday Jeff and I head out in search of the perfect Christmas tree. It’s become a wonderful tradition now that we live in New England.
It’s just not that easy finding Christmas trees in Florida, unless they look like Palm trees and not the kind you can chop down yourself!
Our adventure begins with the initiation of a large cup of a warm and inviting – frothy, double caramel lattes. Enough to keep us warm from old man winter and doused with an adequate amount of sugar to supply us with enough energy to run through endless fields of trees.
We make our way over to Van Wilgens Garden Center where the festivities all begin. Do we want a Blue Spruce, a Frasier Fir or the reliable Douglas-Fir? We grab our saw and off we go. Noses lead the way… onto the most fragrant tree of all, which is, for us the bushy Douglas-Fir, but seriously… these trees looked more like the Fat Albert Spruce. Honestly, for real – that is the name of a real pine fir tree!
The search begins…
There at the end, I think I see it…
Yes, it’s perfect, absolutely gorgeous, we found the perfect Christmas tree!
Jeff the lumberjack cutting down our Christmas tree.
Timber!!!
So the nice people at Van Wilgens Garden Center helped load our tree onto the tractor and tow it back to our car where they kindly hoisted it upon our roof, tied it snugly down for the ride home.
With our Christmas tree placed in her new home, I make plenty of hot coco with a crazy amount of vanilla fudge chunk ice cream floating to the rim of our cups – another round of sugar for tree trimming.
Here we were… all sugared up, unwrapping delicate ornaments and untangling miles of colorful lights to adorn our tree, then we christened with an angel at the top.
I think the tree is b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l!
And here’s the mistletoe where Jeff and I… shared our Christmas list.

This is my absolute favorite holiday song, and so I thought I would croon you with this Christmas carol…
That is… I’m going to channel this through Bing Crosby & David Bowie
hint… (click Bill Cosby & David Bowie names it’s the link to a Christmas song duet)
If I really sang this song to you, I would sound more like Will Ferrell & John C. Reilly

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays!
Little Drummer Boy – lyrics
Come they told me, pa rum pum pum pum
A new born King to see, pa rum pum pum pum
Our finest gifts we bring, pa rum pum pum pum
To lay before the King, pa rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,
So to honor Him, pa rum pum pum pum,
When we come.
Little Baby, pa rum pum pum pum
I am a poor boy too, pa rum pum pum pum
I have no gift to bring, pa rum pum pum pum
That’s fit to give the King, pa rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,
Shall I play for you, pa rum pum pum pum,
On my drum?
Mary nodded, pa rum pum pum pum
The ox and lamb kept time, pa rum pum pum pum
I played my drum for Him, pa rum pum pum pum
I played my best for Him, pa rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,
Then He smiled at me, pa rum pum pum pum
Me and my drum.
